Nanobots are a fairly common trope in sci fi, often as a defence as well as a threat, my guess is Raz, being an AI and always thinking 10 steps ahead knew where we'd be going and what we'd be facing and intentionally saw to it guardians would be infected with these particular nanos as protection against the others.
