Why are supers called supers?

One thing about this whole "balancing" malarkey has always confused me. Why are supers called supers if they're meant to be balanced or stoppable by regular guns/melee/etc? I don't know about you guys, but when I see a hunter or titan pop a super, I expect my lock to get his ass kicked unless I'm packing an off super on my lock. Hell I'm dead if another lock pops their super on me. But. Isn't that why it's a SUPER? I petition supers be removed from the game or nerfed into a basic skill like shoulder charge, the hunter stab one or lock flame shield. As is, they're just so damn confusing being called supers.

A super should be a powerful move that can get you out of a sticky situation or help turn the tide of a battle when you demonstrate good tactics and use it at the proper moment. A super should NOT make up for someone's lack of skill and allow a bad player to go on obscene scorestreaks with next to little effort, nor should it provide a major benefit to the team when used recklessly. That is how supers are balanced while still being super.
