I can't seem to get in to the memory of jeigh, do I need an item or need to kill something to progress? Also I'm having lots of trouble with Ornstien and Smough and I'd rather do it without any summon help for the first time.

Patience and isolation. Smough has huge swings and can sprint across map however when many of these swings are taken it leaves him open. Now this benefits you. You can either use this moment to attack ornstein after Smough as just swung. Or, use it to attack Smough but be wary of ornstein. Keep in mind super ornstein is a bit harder to fight in the final part of the boss
