Is HAES one of the worst movements of the decade?

Yes.

No.

Indifferent.

We see a movement saying that we are becoming so focused on what the term to be "healthism" and claim that many people are obese due to genetics and disorders that can cause weight gain. People are not blaming themselves and trying to blame genetics as they do nothing to change their habits of going to McDonalds every other day. They even denounce many accurate studies and appeal to emotions rather than logic while we have to pay for their medical issues that obviously aren't caused by their weight. It's a nature vs nuture thing, with many HAES activists claiming that weight is solely based on nature when, at the end of the day, only you decide what you put into your body. Are we truly seeing one of the worst movements to date: a movement based on ignorance and self-delusion? I personally think so, but I want to hear what everyone else thinks.

  • I think a FEW people have genetic disorders they can't help. Even eating healthily and working out doesn't help them enough But I'd say most overweight people are just lazy, don't eat right, or both

  • Ironically enough, almost all activists fit the criteria.

    • Some people are fat because of genetic/glandular problems but a majority are fat because of their own choices.

      • I'd love to agree, but there are some people who simply cannon stop gaining weight. I have a friend that is gluten free, that runs, dances, and is so healthy that sometimes when we go eat somewhere I'll be the only one eating. She is very healthy and takes great care of herself. She isn't fat, but she should look very fit. She doesn't. Doctors know something is wrong with her hormonally but they don't know what. They keep telling her to eat healthy and exercise regularly but she already does. It's not her choice. She does everything in her power to stay fit

          • Some people do have conditions that cause them to gain weight (usually a hormone problem) and some of it is down to genetics (more build than body fat though) The majority of people just overeat and don't do enough excercise. Other factors include psychological issues (comfort eating seems fairly prolific) This could all be managed though.

          • In the United States, we pay for all kinds of people's choices... every year there is legislation put out to pay for gender reassignment, smoking is still legal, welfare, all of which are products of choice. What's one more? As a male, when I was in my early twenties, I paid a lot for car insurance, not because of my choices(no tickets nor accidents ever), but because of others.
