They threw the ball because New England didn't call a timeout like Seattle was expecting. Carrol expected Belichick to call a timeout and let Seattle score, to give Brady time to get down the field and at least put it into overtime. When New England didnt call the timeout, the natural logic is that New England is going to get ready to instead, make one final stand and stop the run. This caused Seattles OC to tell Wilson to throw the ball for hopefully an easy TD against the New England defence. It backfired. By not calling that timeout, New England/Belichick successfully tricked Seattle. Game.
