Play Control and focus on capturing spawn points if you need to get points quickly.
However, I don't agree with your statement of "Destiny not being a PvP game", at all. I started out with a laughable .6 K/D or so when I first started playing Crucible. Now, I'm having collection K/Ds of 1.8-3.5 almost every day (collection K/D is your average K/D for the day) and my overall K/D is 1.62. Ranked in the top 9% of the world, and I'm proud of it.
In order to get good at PvP, you have to play PvP more. It's just that simple. You might have tons of skill and experience in PvE but that doesn't amount to shit in Crucible unless you get used to the timing and tactics it takes to take on actual thinking opponents. Destiny was pretty much designed to be a FPS, first and foremost, and with Bungie and Activision both working on it, it's obvious it would have top-notch multiplayer. There may be things about it that seem OP of unfair, but you can say that about any FPS.
Bottom line: If you want to get better at PvP, play more PvP.

He meant getting 10,000 points for the Bad Juju boutny, not getting 10,000 points in a single match

Oh. Duh. I thought he was talking about something like those bounties you get for IB, where you have to get 10,000 Xp total.
