I don't think anything was underrated. 2014 was a very poor year for video games all around.
A lot of garbage was certainly overrated or over hyped.

Plenty of Indie games came out 2014 that were beyond good.

I actually found it to be a pretty good year. Sure there were the few games that got over hyped like Destiny, and Watch Dogs. But there were a lot of solid games that came out. Like Transistor, Shadows of Mordor, Binding of Isaac Rebirth, Shovel Knight, and a few more. Ok so the year was great for people with a PC. Also the Wii U got a lot of great games as well last year.

ThevEvil Within and Shadow of Mordor. The first is a must if you want to see what would have happened if Resident Evil had gone psycho thriller instead of Action Movie. The latter had flaws but the novelty of having an enemy level up when he kills you is fantastic. I've never seen anything like the Nemesis system before.

I still don't think we've seen the impact or potential of the nemesis system

Yup Keeping it relatively simple. Imagine if when you were spotted and failed to eliminate a target in Assassin Creed the target would become more secluded, get better stronger personal guards, became more alert to your presence or even armed themselves with a pistol

I've been of the feeling that it could also be used for "side" mobs in something like Fallout. You can keep mainline in place, but use nemesis for Raiders and such, so even the random, trash encounters mean something. Doesn't even have to be human, can you imagine adaptive deathclaws? I just scared myself with that.....
-
I see your point but the problem would become that the side quest difficulty would quickly over shadow the main story rendering the bosses mute.

True, I was specify aiming this at the many ignored Indie games.
-
I'd hardly call it Indie, but Peggle 2 if it came out in 2014. A lot of Indie titles were overshadowed by Five Nights at Freddies. But Child of Light was supposedly very underrated.
