If it wasn't already said....
You can only play the daily once on any difficulty I believe, before you could play on a lower difficulty, and get the difference on a higher difficulty later, now If you play on any that's it. You can check her play record to see if she played it already.
if you breakdown an engram you get nothing, did she take it to the cryptarch?

That sucks...I broke down an old maxed exotic when I got a new 331 version, got 2 shards.

No, one of the missives. Instead of upgrading it, I just waited until I got it again.
