Good rules. I tend to agree with them. But personally, I have a slightly different approach. I do my best to not engage in a debate (where both sides are "trying to win"). Whenever possible, I will phrase my statements, questions and responses in a manner that attempt to turn the debate into a discussion. A discussion on differing views, yes. But a discussion is so much easier to participate in, emotions tend to get less involved, and it's easier to listen and reply when I am talking with someone instead of speaking against them or trying "to change their mind" (which is usually pointless and impossible). I don't mind debate, it can be a very useful way to get points across and highlight the issues at hand. But the line between a debate and an argument is thin and easily crossed, especially online. I prefer a discussion and if possible, would enjoy a conversation even more. But that's just me.
