American Tea Habits and Yours
It's come to my attention a few times in the past but my late night mind finds it necessary to inquire about it
There's no secret that coffee is infinitely more popular in America than tea. But for those that do drink tea there's one habit or trait about it that drives certain foreigners crazy
And that's leaving the bag in the cup.
For those here that take it out
May I ask
Why do you? And why is it cringed upon when it stays in the cup

Gets in the way of drinking. It also blocks one from dunking biscuits.

I always drink iced tea so this has never been a concern. Come to think of it.. I think I dislike most warm or hot beverages.

You know what drives them even crazier? Ask for iced tea.

My gf is loves tea and got me into the proper way of brewing it. From green to black to chai. It is my understanding that every tea has a diffrent seep time which can vary depending on how strong you like it. I was told you dint leave the tea, ot tea bags in, for feat of burning the tea and making it very bitter.

Those people who cringe when it stays in the cup obviously don't drink tea. "I take the bag out a minute later!" Heh, some people are such plebs when it comes to drinking tea. Like people who don't drink their chai with a teaspoon of honey.

15 RepliesI typically don't make tea by the cup. Usually it's loose leaf either into the pot or in a tea-ball. For example, I utterly LOVE making a pot of gunpowder. The times I do use bagged tea, I will still usually make a whole pot and let the bags steep as long as needed. I've got bagged jasmine tea in the cupboard currently and it works fine. Mostly, I don't like a bag floating in my cup. On the rare occasions when it do use a tea-bag and a cup, once it's steeped long enough, I will put the bag onto a spoon and then loop the string around it to squeeze the last brew out into the cup. Dammit. All of this talk about tea and hearing the rain falling outside is giving me an irresistible urge to brew a pot. Gunpowder time! Thanks a lot Smi!

I have my tea strong with the tea bag taken out. Tiny bit of milk and no sugar. I don't see the point in leaving the bag in. You have to like.. avoid it when you're drinking. And you'll have a weak cup at the start and a strong one by the end.

I leave it in so when I'm done I can squeeze it out and get a lot more of its nutritional value.

The amount of milk used here should [u]exceed[/u] your usual amount of milk; this is what makes it taste so good. Unless you like your tea particularly black, in which case wtf are you reading this for? 3. Boiling water -> mug 4. Leave / stir until at desired strength 5. Remove bag 6. Lift mug to face 7. Open mouth 8. Pour tea into mouth 9. Suddenly realise water is still boiling hot and spit all over kitchen counter / clean pile of laundered clothes. 10. Get buttmad at burnt mouth and wet surroundings. [spoiler]The point of the milk in tea is to add flavour to it, not to simply get the drink to a particular colour, so putting more in first means you get all the extra flavour without the tea having to be weaker than you want it.[/spoiler] Leaving the bag in there just makes a mess at the bottom of the mug.

Oversteeping the tea realeases tannins and adds an element of bitterness unrelated to the actual flavor of the tea.

I enjoy an occasional cup of (green or black) hot tea. Though I enjoy a cup of strong black coffee more.

I take it out since the tea I usually drink doesn't have the string attached. I always thought you were supposed to leave it in though
