Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, and other such European countries are on the forefront of economic progression. Some of these countries have the highest taxes in the world, but have the happiest citizens. Why? Because these countries use those tax dollars to help their citizens rather than waste it on war industry and other bullshit like America does.

Higher taxes would make me very unhappy. I pay enough in taxes thank you. And I have no plans for kids so I don't want to pay higher taxes for things like this.
-
If minimum wage is actually liveable (it's not even close to liveable in America) and all of your healthcare is free, higher taxes wouldn't seem so bad.
-
LOL, someone has to pay for your "free healthcare." And yes higher taxes would still be bad. I would be much much happier with a flat 15% income tax and a federal sales tax. I paid over 30% in taxes last year and I am not happy about that. My wife has and IUD and I have had a vasectomy, why should I have to pay higher taxes because someone feels the need to have 8 kids?

I would be fine with regulation controlling hospital costs. The reason hospitals charge so much is because they know they are only going to get a small percentage of the cost. So they charge $5 for an aspirin knowing they will get back the $.10 that it costs. If insurance companies and hospitals would get on the same page it would be a better system. I had to be in the hospital for a week after a surgery and the final cost was over $50,000. I had to pay $1,500 for my deductible and the insurance company payed $4500. So for the surgery, hospital stay and all the other stuff the hospital got payed $6,000, which is pretty reasonable for something like that. The hospital should have just charge the 6,000 and been done with it.

You'll find in the more... progressed... countries, that people don't have so many kids. Might have something to do with reduced poverty and being able to afford birth control. But noooooo, we can't have affordable birth control in America, it's "a sin." -.-
-
I would be for a program of gov funded birth control, and regulations such as if you are on welfare you have to take it. I would also be for a system of voluntary incentive based eugenics. That, I would put tax dollars towards. And the nut ball christian right can stay the hell out of politics and policy making.

Hmmm, the morality behind that is debatable, but I don't entirely disagree. I certainly agree with separation of church and state, though.
-
I think forced eugenics is terrible, that's why I think it would have to be voluntary. But I see your point of, we are getting into a moral grey area.

Yes, because in theory it's a great idea... but in practice, not so much.

According to the World's Happiness Report, it seems that most developed Western countries are fairly happy. Really, Socialist programs seem to have limited effect on happiness, as does being in a peaceful nation. General cultural habits of the countries appear to be the most important factor, as indicated by Japan's somewhat low score, and Israel's relatively high score. Basically, what you should get out of this is people are weird.

My ability to make statements about such things is limited since I've never studies economics beyond sociology, but I do think the community-centered nature of smaller countries is awesome.
