I'd say Environmental. We have always been developing alternatives to our most used methods. Such as Ethanol, we can use it as a main fuel , but instead we mix it with gasoline. Hydrogen cells for vehicles have been Around for more than 10 years. They are finally hitting the main developers on the market.
Then we are conserving oil the best we can and making use of everything we can get from it. I'd say environmental issues are our greatest concern for the future but other issues just speak the loudest.

But if we didn't use crude oil, how would governments and large corporations make the copious amount of oil money they do today? ;)
