Times have changed, the site has changed, and the member/ninja toolset has changed as well.
Locked topics are a thing of the past. The ninja no longer have the ability/tools to lock threads. I admit, I do kind of miss that. It was a quick way to say "this isn't a good idea and so it is being locked in order to both close the thread and to give folks something to see so they can get an idea of what is appropriate (either for a specific forum/tag or for the site in general". But locking is gone.
Warnings and bans still exist and occur more often than most folks realize. Unlike the "old ways" where a ban resulted in a locked topic with the warned/banned members post content removed, a warning or a ban now removes (in the case of a warned/banned OP) the thread from view. The "old-school" way (where the thread was left, but the content was removed) had the advantage (like I mentioned above) of showing other members that "something had been done". Now, with banned/warned OPs being removed from sight, it SEEMS like no one is being warned/banned. No "bodies" left for people to gawk at.
Most of the ninja enforcement (warns/bans) come to us via the report queue. A much smaller amount of our activity (related to enforcement) is when we are cruising the forums and see something in need of our intervention. It's just a matter of logistics and numbers. There are only a couple of dozen moderators and there are tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of active members posting/reading the forums. It is utterly impossible for us to dive into each and every topic, scanning all of the replies and sub-threads looking for problems. But with those same tens/hundreds of thousands of members going into each of those threads/sub-threads, if they consistently use the report tool, they are our "eyes and ears" and their reports of inappropriate content, misplaced posts, or rule breaking content do make it to our attention and we can then act. The "evidence" of our actions is (as I mentioned) no longer left out to rot in the sun, but are removed.
It's a different system, and has advantages/disadvantages compared to the old system. Our hosts are open to suggestions and the ninja are capable (and often do) offer suggestions, ideas and proposals for changes to make the forums/tools more helpful and effective.

I know your post is old but I just tried to post in a thread and it was locked? Has this changed? Or are employees the only people that can lock threads?
-
Are you supposed to be given a warning as well as a reason as to why you're banned?

Edited by acnboy34: 1/8/2015 11:32:53 PMI feel it important to note the sheer volume of irrelevant/off topic threads that are created in forums like the septagon. Right now I'd argue that it's virtually unnavigable; the old forum was slow and steady and it worked, but as we have more forum goers (assuming), the off topic threads are getting too much. And it's not just the off topic threads, even new threads seem to have an issue where 90% of the replies are bumps. It's so difficult to sort out shitposting. I just hope ninjas / Bungie / whoever figure out how to clean up the forums again. It'd be nice to return to the septagon one of these days but it's almost too much to take in right now. Thank you for replying Recon, it's good to see at least some conversation from mods/Bungie with us. It's been a long time.

It definitely ebbs and flows. Believe it or not, it's gradually getting better. Hang in there.

That's fantastic Recon, so they expect you to run with no feet. Deej should be overthrown. Lmao =}

I know that the report system wasn't really a great way of aiding the moderation process on the old website. Are things different now? Also, if you're outnumbered now more than ever, why not add a shit load more Ninjas? I never understood why we didn't have a mass number of moderators to patrol the forum.

What about moving topics? I'm assuming the answer is that there is too high a frequency of movable posts, but thought I'd ask just in case.
-
They move them when they can and if they see them generally. Previously there were too many to move, and when they were moved more took the moved thread's place so it didn't look like much was being done. That's part of the reason users have been asked to redirect people, that way users who are redirected can change their own tags and when Ninjas move a thread they don't have to explain why. It's basically a combined effort to organize the forums. On top of that, some Ninjas and Mentors can't move posts when on mobile, or so I've heard, since the app doesn't provide all the necessary tools to moderate.

I just report every topic I find inappropriate or in the wrong area

I can't speak for anyone but myself. Over the years, I have seen so many changes that I am just "used to something new". Each change has reasoning behind it (and our hosts are open to discussing the thought behind those changes). What the site has evolved into is something that was (in the view of our hosts and I see their point) built to handle the incredibly massive increase in members and posts. Yes, things here were busy and the site was well-utilized back in the Halo era, but the membership and posts-per-minute are HUGE compared to those "good old days". If the site structure and features had remained "as they were" for this explosion of members and posts, I believe that everyone's experience would have suffered incredibly. (yes, even more than the suffering of long-term members who look back nostalgically on the past).
