Although I truly wish there was a third sub class coming this was circulated in September and proven false by one of the developers in Deej's weekly articles.
The slot you see on each character was because the sub-classes were "lockable" early in development and would allow you to duplicate a sub class. Bungie stated they have no plans for a third

I believe you, I do, but do you remember which it was specifically? And in all honesty, Bungie will make a third subclass just to make more money, maybe not soon, but definitely someday.

Agreed, I know they said on December 4th explaining what it was originally for, buy they also said in the same interview that it could be in the future...

Bungie said that it [i]WAS[/i] for a lockable subclass option, at the time it was a [i]focus[/i]. But they also commented to say that it could be a possibility for the future.... this should trend again and again so they get the hint that we [i]WANT[/i] them...
