You stupid fuck. This is what they do, what they always do. Tell you that some group is coming after you and if you just give up this one freedom, just give them this one power, then you'll be safe. Anyone who speaks out is then labeled as a terrorist/pedophile/communist/boogeyman of the day. The government is stamping out the tools that protect free speech. There are people in China, the Middle East, and other countries who would be unable to speak out against their dictatorships without Tor. Crime will always exist. Always. To deny freedom to everyone because a few people might abuse it is not the answer.
-
And if it is being used by criminals?
-
Roads are used by criminals, as are phones, and normal Internet networks, and just about everything. The fact that something is abused by some people is not a reason to oppress everyone.

Edited by BlaqSpiral: 12/22/2014 3:11:21 AMRoads are patrolled and some calls are monitored, call Afghanistan sometime... using the logic of second amendment opponents, our founding fathers had no concept of the devastation modern forms of communication could cause or the illegal activity that could be hidden by it, so it should be limited. Journalist who trade in information obtained through illegal means are as guilty as people who trade in stolen goods.

The government is the biggest threat to all of us. If you take away the ability of the people to do anything without being monitored and controlled at all times, then you are putting all of your faith in the government to follow rules that no one has the ability to hold it accountable to. We see time and time again that they cannot be trusted, because they do not care what the people want or about what is right. The government imprisons people with no evidence. It tortures people, sometimes to death. It kills people in the street and walks away with no accountability. The government is not there to protect you. It is there to control you. A certain degree of government is necessary to maintain the framework of society, but we are well beyond that point. I would rather live in a world where there is a random chance that something bad might happen than live in a world with total security because there is no freedom. I don't empathize with the mindset of the coward who gets so terrified at the thought of people acting without special permission and supervision that they think it all needs to be shut down for security.
-
I agree about the overreach of government, but the population proper needs to figure put what they want... you can not have safety and freedom. You describe miss use as uncommon, but we both know that if an avenue exists, criminals use it... and often. Things like the internet are beyond the comprehension of our founding fathers, the shear devastation of its reach out ways any bullet or gun... I know my rights, but I also see the natural conundrum of "freedom." Journalist need to worry about the truth, not worrying about their "contacts." Every time a reporter tells a story from a "source" they become the story.

There will always be bad people in the world. Always. Those people use Tor because they can, but getting rid of Tor wouldn't get rid of them or stop them. But having a platform where there is truly free speech, where people can speak without fear of their government is a wonderful thing. We need some way to keep ourselves safe from the people who think that we can't be trusted with any rights. If you're so afraid of people in general that you honestly believe that the negative outweighs the positive when people have freedom, then I just feel sorry for you and I sincerely hope you never get any kind of power.

Going by "If criminals use it..." standard, many a modern conveinence would be shut down. Internet, all civilian transport. Communication devices... -blam!-ing Mcdonalds would die.
-
You really think its not used for criminal activity... good luck with life
-
You're an idiot
-
...I did not say that. Mayhaps you misunderstood. If we were to shut down anything and everything that criminals use, shit would hit the fan fast. Prisoners use the system to manipulate things in their favor, but we can't simply release the -blam!-ers.
-
Its an unnecessary evil...
