You cannot 2 man it... omfg. You must invite someone else for 2 parts to activate the areas. There is no 2 manning the vog...

Its referred to as 2 manning because 2 people do all the work. You only need a third person in your game for the gorgons maze and the jumping puzzle, and that is so the door at the end of the maze is open and the gatekeeper door opens. Once the door to gatekeeper opens the third person can leave, hence why people refer to it as 2 manning the Vault, because the third person is there for only a short while and does no work.

Nope. Gorgons don't activate without 3 and Athens door needs 3.

Cause it really takes a lot to sign in and activate the maze. 2 manning VoG is based around just those two people doing the work. That third to come in and activate the gorgons is just a bypass around technicalities that bungie set, as they never really wanted or assumed people would be crazy enough to do stuff like this.

How did my friend get through the Gorgons solo then?

It must be three anywhere in the raid cause I have left to do the maze and open the gate countless times by myself so We didn't waste time.
