The problem for me comes from the fact that the act of invasive surveillance violates the freedom that countries claim to stand for. If they're willing to violate that freedom, then they can't be trusted to respect others (the CIA torturing people to death illustrates this).
So the question is, do you trust these governments to continue following all of the other laws even after breaking these? Because once they show a willingness to break these rules, I don't think they can be trusted at all.
You only need to look at openly totalitarian governments to get an idea of what a corrupt government can do when they have your private information. If they think you might speak out, you will be arrested. If you privately express a bad opinion, you will be arrested. I have family members in another country who experience this. One was kidnapped for speaking out and another was accused of "terrorism" and arrested. That's in a country where the government knows anything about you that they want to know, even who you vote for.
Don't underestimate the danger of letting the government know too much about your life.
