Firefly requires you to get a critical kill to activate the explosion and shanks don't have a crit spot. The firefly explosion also doesn't cause enemy's killed by it to explode.

That explosion kills the shank but the shanks model just freezes in place. And I meant shanks explode only in reference to their animation. They always explode, but not like firefly, explosive rounds, or icebreaker of course.

I did see the video, that's happened to me just by shooting them it usually due to lag

Oh. I've encountered it a couple times from indirect damage outside this instance. I'm sure lag also accounts occasionally
