What those guys said. You probably aren't getting gear with higher Light level. At some point you should start purchasing legendary gear and an exotic from Xûr. You haven't linked your account so it's hard to help when people can't inspect your character. But if you had 3 pieces of legendary gear and an exotic forth piece, XP upgrades without ascendant shards would at least have you at level 26.

So many people don't read things in game. It's easier to do that than it is to post on the forums. Plus, why people troll the help forums is beyond me.

It wasn't a jab at you, there are tons of people who don't read and post what many trolls see as stupid questions. Feeding their need to be complete a**holes for no reason. Everybody misses some piece of information, in your case, they only told you once in game, so if you missed it... But there are many questions that just take an inspect button or just highlighting in game to answer. Again, not referring to your case specifically. That's why I posted the comment to my own reply instead of one of the trolls'. Not jumping on their bandwagon.
