You are not required to trade in gear. You can play the RNG system for new gear. Or save time and trade gear in.

I know and I personally can wait but I'm just really curious as to how it works. And I want to know if it would be worth upgrading my exotics this weekend.

Why wouldn't it be worth upgrading? You'll still need to be 30 to run the new raid. You'll get new gear in the new raid. This new system is for those that can't raid due to time or lack of friends on one system.
