Classes might be a good way to meet people, is there a community college nearby where you can take an art class of some kind? I took a photo class and met a couple cool people in it.
Or volunteer groups? those are probably hit or miss. Some make it their livelihood, but with christmas around the corner, id guess more "normal" people will be volunteering.

I second this. Classes, volunteer work, (or if you are into sports) maybe a pick-up team of some kind.
