It takes more in-game work to buy a weapon from Xur than it does to get a lucky drop on any particular nightfall or raid..

That is subjective, a person with 3 maxed chars can get 27 coins a week, taking them a whole hour tops to do weekly 3 times, then they wait for xur. Or you could hope to rng for what u want

I do nightfall and weekly on both my characters in an hour and half each reset, its certainly more interesting than farming mats or grinding bounties

That's true, whether one character or three though you're still doing three weekly heroics for the coins. Be it a span of three weeks or one. To me, Xur is insurance that people can get exotics cause Bungie knows there will be a butt hurt population that don't get lucky very often. So if people are getting them from Xur or lucky drops, they're still having to play aspects of the game to get them. Either way they're "earning" in some aspect. Just my opinion.
