They haven't completely left me. I just can't be very effective in the hard raid so I can't really join them. Hopefully there will be other ways to get there (and to 32) in the expansion

Are your weapons maxed? I ran a hard raid a few weeks ago with 4 29's and 2 30's. I was one of the 29's. It sucked, but it was doable. If your team has the skills and the right plans, it's definitely doable. And if you don't need the helmet yet, use lfg or the forums to find normal raid partners until you get the missing piece. You can always run hard after to get the rest of the drops.
