Done the Nightfall two times with my hunter and warlock. Weapon with arc damage is the solution. 2-3shots with the exotic sniper or 4-6shots with the machine gun. You don't need to change the weapon. The Nightmare is easier then the weekly of lev28.

I switched to vision of confluence in the night fall this week just because those damn shielded shanks kept creating problems in the final encounter. Even though it wasn't upgraded at all and I replaced my fully upgraded shadow price it made a HUGE difference in dropping them faster

You seem to have misunderstood me. This isn't a matter of preference. Shanks have Solar shields, which are resistant to all damage, [i]except[/i] for Solar damage. Shoot them with a solar weapon and see the difference in how quickly it goes down.
