Why do Americans use the phrase "beat the game" like it was something to be conquered?

Because you suck at disgiusing your alts, LonePaul
Why do Americans use the phrase "beat the game" like it was something to be conquered?
Because anything that I am, as an American, finished with is then conquered. Conquered the fûck out of a bagel today. 'Merica

Edited by Spooky Delusor: 11/8/2014 5:09:26 AMBecause you have a prejudice against Americans and view it like that to fit your stereotype. Potentially.

I would consider myself a misanthrope so it's not prejudice 'cos I despise everyone equally :)
-
Well a more serious answer is that I grew up saying it that way. That was just what people said.

Edited by GavioD: 11/8/2014 5:33:09 AMA fair point well made. Edit: also, Dragon Age Inquision is out soon if you like other Bioware games

Because that's exactly what it was?

It's just a different mind set, I guess... I see games (especially rpgs) as something to be savoured and enjoyed rather than as a challenge that must be over come. It's like reading a book; would you say you "beat the book" when you finished reading? I'm not saying it's wrong or anything, it always just struck me as strange is all.
-
I see what you're talking about but there is a HUGE difference. In a book there is a protagonist and an antagonist. They fight it out and one wins. End of book. In a game you're the protagonist and most likely beat the antagonist whatever it maybe. Therefore you beat the game. You conquered the enemy.

Edited by GavioD: 11/8/2014 5:17:26 AMI understand your point, but I just don't see it the same way. In my mind the game is the framework for the story (same as a book or movie) and the two are largely synonymous. As you say, I beat the antagonist and this concluded the story; I didn't beat the story, therefore I didn't beat the game. Edit: I realise as I type this that it's all just semantics at the end of the day. It's been a long day :/

You're not playing games right mate. Lol.
