Though Nightfall has the potential for some really awesome loot, it's not often you will get an exotic out of it. I do the nightfall three times a week on three characters and every now and then I get something cool but more likely than not it's something I don't need or already have.
The real reward is the 25% boost to reputation and experience earned. This is invaluable for leveling gear and weapons and boosting faction rank if you need it.

I disagree, I've gotten an exotic every week except one, this week I got an exotic on both my characters, the trick to getting exotics seems to be you have to perform the best in the nightfall, each time I've gotten an exotic, I also had the most kills

Sounds like you've gotten pretty good luck :) However, it has been tested (extensively) to see if you have a higher probability in getting better gear from the nightfall if you solo it vs two man vs full fire team. Needless to say, none of these has any advantage in improving your odds. Same is true for the raid. It is literally completely random.

I didn't mention anything about if I had a team with me or not, I'm just saying, the best performing player tends to get the best rewards, the conclusion I've drawn from my own experiences over the last 5-6 nightfalls

The point is the community debunked that theory. I've played the nightfall myself 20-30 times with rewards spread over three characters and have the tendency to do the best in my games as well. All I can say is you'll have peaks and valleys. Took nearly twenty raids to get all my armor for my warlock and it took only two raids on hard to get my Titan to lv30. Visit the Destiny sub-Reddit sometime. There are a lot of people who post their theories and research for this game there. It can be very helpful at times. One of the latest discoveries was the inequality in the amount of super energy gained from orbs of light and what determined their value. We might come up with ideas for why the game rewards us in such a way from our own experiences, but it helps to look at the many other experiences of people in the community to see if our own theories have any accuracy.
