The ships in Old Russia are colonization ships, they're meant to hold much, much more cargo than normal spaceships as well as more passengers. As to how they actually get off the ground? "The Traveler," is probably the correct answer. Why they look like that? Probably everything to do with aesthetics and nothing to do with aerodynamics.
