Can I freely transfer save files between xbox one and xbox 360?
I heard that it was possible to transfer save files from the 360 to the xbox one. Is it possible to do it the other way around?
I have friends who have the game on the 360 and I'd like to join them.

As long as you use the same gamertag, your characters will be present regardless of whether you are on the Xbox 360 or Xbox One. All you have to do is sign into the game on that gamertag.

Yes. Progress is tied to your gamertag, not the console.
