It's a bull pup design. Common in some firearms today. Look up the Steyr-AUG or the IWI Tavor. Both real life bull pup assault rifles that place the magazine and bolt/chamber/action behind or right above the firing controls. The benefits of this design are you can still have a standard barrel length in a very compact overall length. The downside is slightly less efficient weapon manipulations.

Hi, thanks for the response. I can understand that it is a bull pup design, but even in a bull pup design, cartridges are loaded vertically into the above chamber. There is an empty space (Thumb hole) between the chamber and the magazine well.

Ohh gotcha. I've never examined them that close I've only taken notice that they are bull pups. Now I've got to go look myself!
