As I understand the Mormon church, (like the catholic church), has changed things over time. It occurs to me that faith and god would seem to be unyielding. as such, how can you explain a church, (as in the official position of a church), glorifying one position at one time and rebuking it at another? (I am not asking for specifics or any specific example because that really gets into the minutia.) I am just wondering, conceptually, how that is reconciled by followers in general?

  • There are new things added to help our generation stand up to "satan's army" Our prophet receives relegation from God when these things need to be added

  • So I understand additions. But I am talking more about changing positions. As in 1978 the revelation to allow "black people" into the priesthood. I don't understand how in 1977 dark skin in the priesthood would not be allowed, but that all of the sudden in 1978 it was okay. It seems arbitrary to me. To me, (and correct me if I am wrong), Mormons believe their prophets. That would have to also involve historically believing as well...(if not it would seem to shatter one's faith). For instance, many christians would argue that they agree with every single action of Jesus Christ...(not that "well, some of the stuff he did I disagree with, but...). So do you believe the prophet was right in 1977 to not allow dark skin to join the priesthood and that in 1978 the prophet was right to change that edict? (And I know this issue must get old for you to explain, but I am approaching it more as a change of stance issue than anything else).

  • I believe it was right to change it. The doctrines were built in older times were segregation was common. I believe that the prophet changed the rule when the time was right.

so you believe 1977 was not the right time, but that 1978 was the right time, and that the revelation came from god...(implying that in 1977 god believed the time was wrong and in 1978 god believed the time was right). so for me, for instance, to my core that just feels, well...wrong. beyond belief or personal desire, or intellect or anything else, it just "feels" wrong. having said that, my question for you then is how can one who doesn't believe in something as important as god, believe in god? i mean their are a surprising number of us who would love to believe, but to our core we don't feel it. it would be like if you asked me to believe you could fly. there are books written about you flying and stories told by people about how you flying has affected their lives. but as much as i want to believe and may say i believe, i just to my core can't believe it. how can someone who simply can't believe something is true, somehow to their core come to believe it? (lol...i know pretty broad question, but this is a very large issue for so many people who both have and don't have religion in their lives).

All I can say is that these things may seem wrong at times. God has a plan for us and even though we may not agree, we have to have faith. I believe that God knows when time is right for everything to work according to his plan. The prophets have given us many great things as well, such as a set of modern rules, and marriage belief. I have personally seen my family blessed from this church. I know that this church gives guidelines for a healthy family life, and personal life. I believe that the biggest part of religion is having faith. I challenge you to ask your local missionaries to come over and answer any further questions you have. I'm sure they would be able to answer this question much better than I could. I hope this helps in some way!

  • well, that is what i mean...that you either have faith or you don't. but you can't make yourself have it. you either believe or you don't. I have explored a number of religions, (including mormonism at one time), and although sometimes things sound nice in each one, they are only words to me. i have really opened my heart and mind up to give religions a chance, but I simply can't find anything there. so i could have all my questions answered, and even if i were to interpret those answers as knowledge, all of that knowledge brings me no closer to god or faith or any of that. for me it is like that picture where everyone around you says they can see something in it that you can't. i can try and i want to but it doesn't matter, i simply don't see what many of you see.

  • I understand. Thank you for your honesty. I think you are a person that would like to feel it personally, rather than hear other people's stories of how it changed their lives. I recommend praying to God. There are no rules on prayer. Pray that you can learn something in the scriptures, talks, or any other church doctrines. Then execute it by reading the scriptures, talks, ect. I know that you will receive an answer. Also share the way you feel with your local missionaries.
