Exotic engrams do not drop so you did not miss out on one. More than likely you saw an Uncommon Green engram that was being shaded to look yellow by a nearby red visual effect. This is a known issue and the team is investigating a fix.

Ahh! I wondered about that possibility. Yes the shade was a vibrant yellow so my first thought was the exotic. thank you for letting me know.
