Weapons and armor gain a portion of the experience that YOU earn, regardless of where that experience comes from.

Not necessarily. Armor and subclasses will get any and all XP you gain, but weapons only get XP through kills with that weapon, or end-of-game XP bonuses, or bounties.

I find that turing in bouties with the weapon I want to level does it much quicker
