I do indeed. But I do remember when I learned about DLC and how all that shit works, and man was I pissed....All the crying and complaining I see on the forums, (and there is a SHITLOAD) , I chalk up to immature kids being immature kids. We've all been there, you and I just didn't use Bungie.net to use as or bitching podium. Kinda like when we would vent to each other about tables and shit at work. The kids just haven't learned how to vent their frustrations and emotions yet, so they lash out. It's hard to ignore, but when you find the threads on here where people aren't whining, good things happen.
Agreed. And as far as the DLC goes, yeah, I'm pretty miffed about it, but at the same time, really pleased that we don't have to pay a subscription to keep it all coming.
These are my thoughts on DLC
You can be irritated that we the consumers are being asked to essentially purchase content twice. (and you have every right to be, I -blam!-ING hate the DLC practice)
Imagine you are watching the standard Lord of the Rings, but have the option to purchase the extended edition with like another hour and a half of extra scenes. Same movie, but better with extended edition.
Or you can be glad the company is planning on supporting the game for a while with content updates...I think Bungie has always done a pretty good job of hot fixing things to keep their games interesting adding game modes and stuff like that. I would be seriously surprised if we don't start to see some things like that by December.
I suppose those are the options we are stuck with: buy season pass, by DLC's individually, or suck it up and play $60version...sucks hard balls...
Exactly, but the biggest difference here is that similar games (FFXIV for example) charge you a subscription fee of like $15/month and then only roll DLCs on occasion. I ended up spending way more money on that game than I think I probably ever will with Destiny, but again, I can't expect Bungie to just keep this game up for years and years for free, either. Especially not with Activision (AKA the kings of DLC) involved. But hey, the big thing is I'm happy with the game and don't mind paying for the DLC, because I imagine they will each give me the hours of play that the base game has, and I'm not anywhere close to bored with it yet.
DLC is quite an interesting topic to discuss, not only in regards to Destiny, but gaming in general. I feel like DLC has changed so much, so quickly, over just the past few years. I mean, I remember the days when you never expected DLC, balancing changes, or network updates. The game you bought was the game you got, and that's it! Nothing more. No changes, no additions, nothing.
In hindsight, how amazing was Halo: CE for not having DLC and still having the lasting power and awesome multiplayer AT ORIGINAL RELEASE, and never getting updates or balance tweaks??? I guess that's what Halo 2 was for... they had to release an entirely new game! LoL
I remember when DLC started gaining ground. You never knew if a game was going to have DLC or not. Some did, some didn't. There was a lot of questions like: Will that game you just bought have additions in a couple months? Will I still be playing it? Will other people still be playing it? How do they decide if a game gets extra content? Popularity? Longevity? Do they plan it before release or are they already working on it when a game is released? Does that mean the game isn't finished? How much will it cost? Is it worth it? There were definitely some growing pains and some of those pains are still lingering even today.
I guess some of those questions have been answered. Pretty much ALL games have DLC now, especially big titles, and they are definitely working on it and planning for it before the game is released. I think one of the main reasons DLC seems like a money grab for developers/publishers and why we have this lingering feeling in the back of our minds that games are released "unfinished" is because our view of how games used to be final when released and how DLC has evolved over time.
Now, look at Titanfall. Perfect example. When it shipped, it was just a bare bones online shooter but very fun, some would say revolutionary. A few game modes, online only, campaign/story lacking, only about 10 maps or so. Look at it now: more game modes, more cusomization, balance tweaks, regular game updates, burn card additions, the black market, and 3 DLC packs later.... the game has evolved a lot. I think that's the trend now and how games many games will be in this generation. Everything except the maps were free so you got the core of the game, all the updates, a bunch of free stuff, but the extra maps were optional if you wanted them. I think that's how DLC should be.
The season pass idea I'm on the fence about. For games I know I'm going to play for a long time and I know I will like, I do like that the season pass gives me discounts on the content I was going to buy anyway, but at the same time, I know that means the game was shipped "unfinished" because that content was planned all along. Why don't they just push back the release date, finish that content, and include it in the game? As you can see, I have a love/hate/conflicting relationship with DLC... kind of like my relationship with my family, hahaha.
We will see how the DLC of Destiny turns out to be. IF it truly is extending and "completing" a shortened story, then that's a problem. IF it is just adding more content for the people who want it and are still enjoying the game, making it optional to purchase, that's how it should be. Personally, I don't feel like Destiny is unfinished or cut short as is. It feels like a complete game to me, so I'm not too upset about the DLC at this point. IF someone already feels like Destiny isn't enough for them as is (even though it has already changed since release, which would NEVER have happend a few years ago), then I can see how the DLC would tick them off, but that's just all personal preference and opinion.
People can act in any number of unsavory ways on the internet behind the disguise of anonymity. It doesn't matter if someone is mature, insecure, crazy, educated, smart, genius, old, young, angry, satisfied, joyful... and anywhere in between or all of them... the internet doesn't discriminate and many people just don't have a filter.
In my opinion, that is the single greatest thing about the internet and also the most disturbing/scary thing about it at the same time.
Or, as my one friend always says... "These dang kids and their rap music..." hahaha
