Orange is Solar damage, represented by the flame icon on the weapon. Purple is Void damage, represented by the purple swirl icon. Blue is Arc damage, represented by the spark looking thing (sorry, I have no idea what it's supposed to be lol). For the most part, only Special and Heavy weapons are able to deal these types of damage. The purpose of these is that some enemies are more susceptible to one type of damage. If an enemy has an overshield, the color of the shield (you'll see after you shoot at it) lets you know which type of damage to use against it. For example, you shoot a Wizard and you see an orange glow around it, that means it is susceptible to Solar damage. Using a Fusion/Sniper/Shotgun/Machine Gun etc. with that damage type will hurt it way more than your primary weapon, which only does Kinetic damage (with a few rare exceptions). I hope that answers your question and was helpful. That's about all there is to know about it, to the best of my knowledge.

  • That was very detailed! does it matter what weapon and rarity i use? for example does an uncommon solar fusion rifle do the same shield damage to a wizard as a legendary one? and does that apply to shotguns, sniper rifles etc?

  • the element bonus is going to be applied to the weapons stats, so gererally speaking a legendary is going to do more damage then a rare so in turn it would be more effective. however, if you only have a rare you still get the same damage buff, it is just applied to the lower base attack level.

  • The difference is going to be the damage rating of those weapons. The legendary weapons, when fully upgraded, will have a much higher damage output than the lesser quality items (green and blue).

  • oh ok, so since legendary weapons can have 300 as there damage logically that would also mean 300 damage to the shield with that element.

  • As far as the weapon type, it doesn't really matter. Whatever your favorite is. As far as the rarity...good question lol I'm not entirely sure, but if I had to guess, I'm sure Legendary would still do more damage than a Rare. But, an Uncommon or Rare weapon with elemental damage will probably still do more damage to a mob affected by that element (especially shields) than a Legendary or Exotic with no elemental damage.

  • that intresting, selenium explained how the higher your damage the more your elemental damage will also be, yet that kind of backfires on its self if even a low damage solar weapon does more solar shield damage then a legendary kinetic weapon even though the legendary technically does more damage, but the "Immunity" principle kicks in then since kinetic is not the intended damage type for what ever shield your shooting. hmm =.=

  • In the absence of a shield, the weapon with the higher damage output will out perform its lessor counterpart; however, when there is a shield, a Kinetic weapon will take much longer to strip the shield than using a weapon with the corresponding element. Best practice...keep a secondary weapon of each type unless you get one of the few primary weapons with elemental properties like the one I have equipped.

  • Except it would do double damage to the shield if the right element was used
