Yep, was just coming to write the same thing. The bestway I found was to do public events. If you know the schedule you can get at least one or maybe more shards plus about 16 or more Vanguard Marks in less than an hour. You get 4 marks for each event and it takes much less time than a strike, plus you can combine bounties and patrol mission with them while you do it.

Guaranteed ascendant material first public event of the day. After that good luck. Farmed 2 hours got 0 from 8 events.

Odd things those RNG's. I did this once, got one ascendant shard in about an hour plus a bunch of engrams two of which decoded into shards. But really I do it for the marks, which I trade for legendary gear, then break it down to shards. Kinda round about I know. Makes more sense to just to a mark trade (of say 100) for shards or bundles of materials like relic iron.
