Can someone explain this better? I'm genuinely confused by this.

Weekly Heroic Strikes have 3 difficulties, each one gives you 3 strange coins as a reward after first completion. However, completing it on a harder difficulty right away also awards you the lower difficulties' rewards. (9 coins in total if you play the hardest) I guess you have already gotten your answer but I'm writing this here for others to see.

On the Weekly heroic strike there is a Set of Difficulties like in the Missions. Each one yields a strange coin.

I didn't think you could alter the difficulty on Strike missions, how do you do that? Do you still get the other bonuses as well as coins?

If you're higher level you have the option for a higher difficulty. If you're too low level you won't even see the option. And yes you get other bonuses: more vanguard marks and more vanguard reputation.
