what i do is do the boss missions or strike missions. best chance to get blues with light, crucible is random but can get some pretty damn good gear most of my armor and weapons are crucible... got an exotic from crucible ;)
also level up your faction. once rank 2 can buy legendary faction armor

Factions such as Dead Orbit and New Monarchy require rank 3 to buy their gear; Vanguard is rank 2.

I definitely recommend the strike playlist. Most drops I find there are blues and a few purples plus you get vanguard marks and reputation.

once 18 you can start getting vanguard points or marks. as basic your already in the faction of vanguard so the two people under the tower can sell you gear once you reach certain ranks. atm you can purchase a class specific item like a arm band or cloak or badge. with that item you can level up your faction rank besides vanguard there is the new monarchy, future war cult, and dead orbit (my faction) look on your tower map in bungie app or online and you can see their locations
