But seriously, I do genuinely like Destiny (My list of complaints are actually smaller than most people's too)

Did you get the game? Also, I love Destiny too, but it's flaws are worth discussing.
-
Not yet, but I've played through a lot of it! And the flaws are certainly worth discussing, it's just that the positives outweigh the negatives IMO.
am on mobile so if my posts somehow seem to follow proper capitalization, it's not my fault
I like destiny.

Edited by Demigod: 9/16/2014 3:43:42 AMBut Goji...the story is almost nonexistent, characters are boring, dialogue is poorly written and mediocrely voice acted. The planets are small and the missions are all the same with bullet sponge bosses that have no interesting mechanics... It not good mang :/
But Goji...the story is almost nonexistent,
the presentation is jumbled up and weird, with several important elements being relegated not to cutscenes but to offhand conversations with dinkleghost, but there's a ton of story in the game [barring the fact that it's pretty much impossible to create games without stories]. and let's not get into the grimoire cards, which tell some of the best stories bungie has ever told.
characters are boring,
characters barely exist, that's for sure.
dialogue is poorly written
my number one gripe with the game. i mean, i understand the tone they were trying to set but there are better ways to do it than "i don't even have time to explain why i don't have time to explain."
and mediocrely voice acted.
eh, i felt everyone did well with the material they were given. dinklage in particular was polarizing though. sometimes his sarcastic, monotonous tone was perfect for the occasion and other times it felt boring. one thing's for sure: the ghost is no 343 guilty spark.
The planets are small
i'm used to bungie disappointing when it comes to engagement scale. reach made me 100% sure to never ever trust any developer about that kind of stuff ever again, so i expected some "medium" sized planet zones. destiny fulfills that quota.
and the missions are all the same with bullet sponge bosses that have no interesting mechanics
depends. a lot of the bosses can vary in terms of location [ex. world's grave boss" which gives them a lot of tactile discrepancy. but perhaps more importantly this is the first ADS shooter i've ever played that actually manages to engage me from a core gunplay standpoint. i love the shooting mechanics in the game, and i don't mind grinding when i can A) approach encounters differently without being punished B) consistently enjoy the core gunplay it's the same rationale that allows me to enjoy several of the flood missions in halo CE.
... It not good mang :/
the grimoire cards alone justify the existence of the game to me

Edited by ROBERTO jh: 9/16/2014 5:39:05 AM
the grimoire cards alone justify the existence of the game to me
The Grimoire cards that could have been written without the game having anything to do with it and would have been exactly the same; the game itself never explains anything, and if I have to go to outside source material just to figure out what the hell is even happening, then the game is poorly written/made. Grimoire cards may justify the existence of the universe, and I agree they do, but the game Destiny itself they do not justify. The game is fun, certainly, with some gripes, but it falls flat in the realm of story; relegating all of your important plot points to one off dialogue comments doesn't make the story good, it just sets us up for more confusion because they never bother explaining anything. This would be perhaps more forgivable if the Grim cards were in the game itself ala Mass Effect's codex, but they aren't. The game merely points you in a direction and says "shoot" without even bothering to give you any reason to care. I'm certainly not playing this for hours on end for the story that's for sure; I'm doing it in prep for the Raid. That's the one thing the game excels at, making you feel as though you are working towards something in the end game. But that's about the only thing.

In my opinion, the story of a game is judged by how it presents things in game. Either by exposition from a character, or a codex that can be accessed from a menu in the game itself. As far as I am concerned, the Grimoire cards are an entirely separate entity from Destiny, in the same way I view the Halo novels. For without the app, they are entirely inaccessible and therefore not a part of the game that I am playing. Though I too enjoy the gunplay I can't help but feel that the RPG aspects (specifically the skill tree and subclasses) are woefully under designed. That and they do nothing with the bosses besides giving either the ability to one shot you. I'd like to see some interesting things happen, maybe different phases. Such as maybe the giant Orge on the Moon goes berserk after taking so much damage, maybe half of his HP and HULK SMASHES the area so much the flooring gives way. The structure you one collapses and deposits you a co in a cracked ravine and you deal with him King Kong style or something*. Maybe I'm jaded but I'm sick of seeing interesting environments and boss design go to waste and have the biggest boss (physically speaking) in the game just pace in the center of a room while trying to Laser Face you. *I am very tired right now so that was about the best I could come up with, remember; out arguing a sleepy person is the same as out fighting a drunken one.

i'm basically about to fall asleep on my keyboard as well i'll respond sometime tomorrow :P in the meantime i dislike the entire concept of "out arguing" people as discussed in this brilliant TED talk
