Congratulations. You have achieved the next level of Story Enlightenment.
Allow me to guide you.
The inherent problem of story driven multi-player is just that. They CAN'T tell you who you are or what you died from. Because then everyone has the same backstory. You can't customize when someone is telling you this is who the character is and how they behave.
You want to know more about your character? YOU make it up. You ask the questions. Now YOU must answer them. YOU must write out and fulfill your DESTINY.
My Titan's name is Kalienthia. She was a soldier during the Collapse and fought against the first waves of the Darkness and it's Horde of aliens. She was defending fleeing refugees as they sought to flee Earth from the Cosmodrome. It was there she was slain.
Her Ghost in question found records of her unit and decided she specifically would be a good Guardian because she was "interesting" based off the reports it found in old ruined databanks and spend the rest of it's existence looking for her specifically. It found her in the ruins of the Cosmodrome where she was slain.
Her experiences at being brought back to life were a bit surreal. Her nature as a Titan and a Striker manifested in a constant subconscious itching of the fists and a strong desire to just punch something. The satisfaction of landing her first skull crushing blow and feeling the shock of the punch ride up her arm was something she thoroughly enjoyed.
She remembers her name and remembers the Hell of the collapse. She doesn't need to hear the tales and legends of the Fall of the Golden Age. She lived that war and finds their inaccuracies amusing. She also developed a disturbing (at least to her Ghost) tendency to dance on the graves and bodies of her slain enemies. (Done when a mission is concluded as I make a beeline for the spot I killed the Major or Ultra and start dancing.)
She takes pride in being a Titan and hearing about their indomitable nature. (Taken from reading the various tooltips of the Marks of Six Fronts. As well as the descriptions found in Titan Armor.)
She also has a love of the color blue.
Your turn.

If they had made the character a silent protagonist I would agree with you. But we had voiced cutscenes where the player character showed personality. Thus my creativity has been taken from me and will likely be continued to be in the future as they actually get around to more cinematic moments like with the Stranger called Dinklebot "Little Light" and the fly into the reef where we go in the cockpit of our ship and the subsequent confrontation with the Queen and her Brother. So either Bungie needs to commit to telling a meaningful story to engage their players or they need to pull back and make it as minimalist as possible and hope they can provide us with enough content to keep us intrigued. I am fine with them fleshing out the "Guardian: instead of just making us a guardian. I just want them to go full hog with it and get some consistent character development and portrayal. Something like SWTOR would be fine with me. THe story telling in that was one of my favourite aspects of the game.

And so the Hero turned the page only to realize he'd just finished the Prologue and found something even more sinister on the Horizon. It read... "CHAPTER ONE."

With a $60+ price tag, this should have been the first book not the first "chapter." You could play through the story campaign in one sitting, providing you had a fair bit of time, and you are right. It did very much feel like an initial chapter. But like I said, should have been the first book. If we were talking story alone, there isn't enough a hook to get me to invest in future installments. Luckily for them, they happened to make fun game play and even then I can only say that because I haven't invested quite as much time in it as others who hunt for loot or do the multiplayer stuff. Shall be starting that later today and if there isn't enough payoff for my effort, this game is going to get stale real fast. But that's just my two cents. I respect your opinion but contend that there is definitely room for improvement. Where they did fair deal right, they dropped the ball too often and have shaken my confidence in the future of the game a little.

I agree that the story seems lackluster and lacking when you look at it from a perspective of "How fast can I speedrun this?" I do agree that there is room for improvement. Where we stand on opposite footing is that I view what's available now with a glass half full look. They can only add more and they will. I've found my enjoyment has improved immensely when I stopped trying to rush the game. I stopped racing to get to those higher levels. I stopped expecting top level gear to drop and called off the personal hunt for it. I turned Destiny into my personal sandboxy playground and I am loving each and every second of being a kid again. Reading through your post I'm seeing a lot of "Investment" "Payoff" "Time" sprinkled through it. It feels like you're trying to have an agenda and you're basing your enjoyment off how fast you can complete that agenda. It's all in how you view things. Read these two lines and tell me which one sound more like the better investment. "I'm enjoying the game BUT there are problems that need to be fixed." "I'm enjoying the game AND there are things that could be improved on." Enjoy your agenda. Let me know when you complete it. You're more then welcome to join me in the sandbox.

Nice! Proof that this game can be as fun or as boring as you make it.

Good story. Enjoyed reading that.
