Q: Why do I need to level up my Cryptarch, also what is a Cryptarch!
A: The Cryptarch is the person to the right of the spawn point in the towers terrace. He deciphers your Engrams (Decoherent (Rare), Legendary, Exotic, etc.) Leveling him up increases the chance of finding higher tiered weapons or gear from them. Try to get as many Engrams as you can! Each deciphered Engram increases it's level. With each increased level, Cryptarch sends a package to Postmaster and it offers a handful of engrams. In case you need to know which increases experience in what quantities, here is a table.
Common: +5
Uncommon +15
Decoherent: +150
Legendary: +200
Exotic: +500

Fellow guardian purchased an Exotic Engram from the mysterious merchant Xur. Seems it is a guaranteed exotic item for an uncertain class of its archetype. When decoded at the Cryptographer you gain 500 experience with him.

Your information is key to our reports, thank you.

How are Engrams awarded to fire teams? It seems like I can get Engrams from my teammates kills and sometimes get two engrams from one kill.
-
Engrams are randomly generated, unless you mean mission rewards, in which those are as well randomly generated. Like ammo drops.
-
I meant general enemy drops. So the engrams will be randomly generated for anyone in a fire team? Regardless if they killed the enemy or not?
-
Yes, regardless of who killed it or what dropped it. It has a chance of spawning from their corpse.

Thanks so much! Great info

No problem.
