is there a certain symbol that confirms you have passed a mission? I feel like when I've joined a fire team I really have no idea where I'm at on the map/in the game at that point.

I am confused by the symbols also. I don't have any stars with leafs on the side. My map markers are all solid red circles with stars in the center, clear circle with a star or not unlocked yet. Do the stars with the leafs on the side indicate completion of that particular mission? Clarification would be most appreciated.
