Don't pick up the golden chests untill your max level. They seem to scale to your level so its better to hold off and wait. Like that you will get more use out of the gear you find in them.

I think they scale more towards the zone rather than your level. I'm lvl 20 and I picked up a lvl 10 shotgun from a golden chest on the moon.
