I think people misunderstood them when they said: "Our servers won’t know the difference". Because they did also say "Retailers will stick to time-zones". And I think they are using the term "Retailers" here broadly/generically. Meaning they are also referring to XBOX/PS digital stores. In other words you may not be able to play it before your timezone reaches 00:00 9/9/14, because XBOX/PS would not allow it. Even though Destiny servers are up and running.

He is correct on this as he said physical copy. The digital is the only time locked ones there are, all others will be accessible at the time the servers go up. What they meant about the servers not knowing the difference and the retailer portion, is that you will not be able to play until 12am due to not being able to have a physical copy (legally speaking) until 12am your time. If somehow you were to have one before though, you would be able to access. That isn't to say you wont get in to trouble, as if they see someone on from a time zone that should not have the copy yet they might reprimand the person in some way, but it will be possible none the less to log on and play. Don't be surprised when you see someone playing on twitch long before they should be, as I am sure there will be crafty people that manage to get their hands on a physical copy that shouldn't, yet will not be smart enough to avoid being caught doing so and announce it to the world while streaming. Hell, there is already someone on the forums (at least they claim) that has a copy. Once midnight rolls around somewhere in the world, they will have access.

IGN having a live-stream on September 8 10AM PDT, If you have a psychical copy you will be able to play it on 9/8.
