I'm pretty sure it was just thrown in to give us a teaser and preempt some of the people who were likely to complain about the game being "too easy". I dashed past all the ?? enemies I could find, looking for chests and ghosts. They were basically just shortcuts between lower level areas.

So far. There's also a good chance they locked some areas because they knew some of us would find a way past.
