Marty Wins Lawsuit

Dont know if anyone has made this thread yet.
King County Superior Court judge Jeffrey Ramsdell in Seattle has approved a deal in which Ryan will pay O’Donnell more than $95,000 to settle legal claims related to a lawsuit that O’Donnell filed in May. The lawsuit offered a rare glimpse on what was happening inside Bungie, the original Halo developers who is now at work on the big online shooter Destiny. O’Donnell was fired on April 11 as audio director at Bellevue, Wash.-based Bungie “without cause,” according to the lawsuit. He was hired in May 2000 and produced the pulse-pounding soundtrack that helped make Halo a memorable hit. Over its lifetime of sales, Halo has grossed an estimated $3.4 billion, according to the lawsuit, which was filed in Superior Court in King County in Washington. O’Donnell said in the filing that Bungie and Ryan gave no explanation for the firing. The suit notes that Bungie has a policy to pay employees accrued but unused vacation, paid time off, sabbatical time, and other benefits. Ryan and Bungie reportedly promised to pay. The suit was filed May 1. In an answer on May 27, Bungie and Ryan denied that O’Donnell was due any relief. Under the agreement, Ryan will pay O’Donnell more than $38,385 in unpaid work and vacation time, as well as another $38,385 in double damages. With attorney’s fees and interest, the total judgement for O’Donnell will be $95,019.13. A spokesperson for Bungie has not answered a request for comment.
how shitty is that, still "no reason" for being fired.

  • Good for marty, but you guys REALLY need to brush up on company terms, being fired with no cause is a GOOD thing, it means he is being let go with no real bad blood, and with no big bad mark on his resume that says he was fired for incompetence or something. they're letting him off with a great career resume and nothing bad said about him.

  • ....Halo franchise made 3.4 billion dollars to-date.... and Marty just gets $95k.... Nearly 14 years of music, and his payed vacation/sabbatical/etc. only amounted to 38k.... Folks, this is what you need to see when you read articles like "Video Game Designer is one of the top money making jobs around!"... Good lord...

Considering the history between Marty and Bungie that is most definitely disappointing to hear. At least he got paid. He was one of the employees I always enjoyed seeing on the forums over the years, regardless of how sparse that activity may have been. Marty seemed like a genuinely cool adult.

    • Finally, some closure on this. He should compose a song about it.

I feel like there is more to this story than the public is being told, but i'm glad that Marty will get some remuneration, and that this is (hopefully) finally over.

    • I am saddened that Bungie fired Marty without hardly any qualms about his removal. His stance as one of the most conservative employees of Bungie may have been a factor; I should not meddle in such speculation though. 343i should take full advantage of this event and utilize his experience in some way shape or form to continue the legacy of amazing Halo music.

    • Awesome, his music really made Halo and sounds great in destiny. Although hopefully he can get hired by 343 before Halo 5 is done.

    • Glad to see it's continuing in Marty's favor, but it's sad that this ever happened in the first place. And now I'm just more curious as to what they were thinking when they fired him.

    • I think he definitely deserves a reason. Marty's music is still amazing, the last array mission in the beta proves that!

      • I hate they terminated him. Bunige games and Marty were like PPnJ, together perfect. I bet Activision is really at fault >: since publishers have a lot of say over games and the studios employment.

      • Marty has been there forever, I don't know what Ryan was thinking. Did he really think Marty would forget about that policy?

It's good to get some closure about this. Marty's music has been a big inspiration to me and helped make Halo great. Funfact: Marty composed the music in the sequel to Myst, Riven. He's been with the Bungie team since 1999 but has worked on Bungie music since 1997. And by the way, Marty wasn't fired for "no reason". It was "without cause". As in "The employee did nothing wrong to get fired". This can be a good thing.

          • Good for Marty, bad for Bungie. Bungie screwed up big time kicking out one of their best assets, I hope Bungie learns this lesson.

          • Good for Marty! That is crap that they won't give us, and much more importantly him, a reason. If they thought he was doing shoddy work or something, then lay it out. But based off what I hear, it all sounds wonderful in Destiny (except for the podracing sound, hah).

                • In Washington State employers don't need a "reason" to fire a person. Its totally legal to fire someone without cause. The reason he won was he was able to prove that Bungie themselves had a policy to pay him said money but failed to fulfill their side of the contract.
