When I hike we usually go about a mile every 20 minutes.
Bring snacks, and lots of water. Nothing will ruin a hike like being thirsty the whole time. Of course it's also dangerous.
I usually take a bag or two of m&ms and some trailmix/nuts.
I don't know what the hikes are like over there, but here hiking boots are pretty much a necessity. You're feet would just die without them.
Also water.

I've got boots and I'm generally good for kit, I'm in the process of buying what I think I'll need, I'll be taking 3Litres of water with me so I think that should hopefully do. I want to really get into Hiking so this is just the start.

I'd go hike some with what you already have before you buy a bunch of stuff. For a 5 hour hike you don't need to be all geared up. It would suck to buy a bunch of stuff, then decide hiking isn't really your thing.

Oh no I will love it I'm sure, I'm really into my excercise and I live next to a bit of countryside, I take the dog for a long walk every day, I'm getting into this because I wanna climb a few mountains eventually so I can turn a small hobby into a bit more of a challenge. Plus it's more exercise :)

That's great, but I still wouldn't go all out on your first hike. Even if you do like it, you'll be able to make better purchases knowing exactly what you need.

That's the idea, to be honest I've only bought the cheapest kit anyway, as I go further into it I plan to buy more/better but I haven't spent much.
