What's the point? Flying around to different worlds? It seems like Star Trek without a bad ass star ship. What am I missing?

There are several things you can do. But I imagine this is more of a sandbox game. You make your own fun, or you won't have fun at all. You have to step forward and figure it out, the game won't tell you what to do.

An explorer's game. It looks awesome; I want to explore its universe. However it will eventually seem 'infinitely finite'. The random generator has a template with a range of values to determine the worlds. Once you've seen all the possible combinations, the game will become repetitive and thus seem boring. The time before 'realization' (that you've seen all combinations of worlds) depends on that randomness range

It seems interesting & I get the idea of exploration. However there does not seem to be anything deeper than just going from planet to planet and having a look.

Games always tell you what to do. Go here, collect this, kill them NMS gives you complete freedom.

Hit the nail on the head there. One reason I don't really look forward to release of this as its just seems overly plain.(+ the fact its single player)

Yep. Unless there's a story worth living, it's just a simulator. The space combat will be fun for a while, then I would try aircraft combat in the atmosphere, flying through trees and over mountains. Maybe a "Protect the Wildlife" kind of game mode. Or a King of the Hill mode where the whole planet needs defending. Customize your ship. Have massive space battles. Get points for discovering more species. Discover new technology, get faster ship engines. Stuff like that.

Exploration is the core of the game, but it isn't without other features. Murray has stated in an interview that there is a malevolent force in NMS' universe. On occasion, the player will be given the option to interact with it. In fact, he said there could be times that defending a planet could happen. It is an infinite universe. He's also hinted that a story exists in NMS, but it won't be there to push the player toward some endpoint. As to what that story is, they've left that mystery out in void, waiting to be discovered. You should look into our NMS group. We're gathering explorers.

It's PS4 exclusive. Until I can play it on my PC, joining a group is pointless. Why hype for something I won't get?
-
It's not PS4 exclusive, nor did Hello Games ever say it was PS4 exclusive. It's releasing first on the PS4, it will release on PC a few months later, then it might release on Xbox One. You'll get to see NMS on the Oculus Rift...

What's the point of anything though? We are all but dots on this blue marble, yet it is always because of one person that all the changes that matter in the world come about. You can impact the universe. You craft your story. That is the point.

Exploration. Discovery.
