It's no different from any other game, really. You need their service to access online features of a game. Xbox Live isn't needed for campaign, but is for PvP. PS+ is needed for certain aspects if not all of them as well. It's the point of the service, after all.

I didn't think they would seperate PS3 and PS4 Alpha/Beta requirements like that; but as a potential future leader of the PS3 community here on the forums I thought I'd offer what I've been hearing. Word of mouth being what it is and all, you're probably right. There isn't much reason to think that. While it is the point of the service; I disagree with how they pitched it. The written press release says it will be entirely free to play with no subscription model, and certainly not pay to win. Then the console companies come along and say hold on everyone; we're making it pay to play so there :P I'm still telling them to shut up and take my money.....It would just be nice to be made aware of it upfront and not only after I've done my own research into the matter. This thread is just to inform everyone so that they know why a subscription is required and what they'll be able to access with it (Or not).
