I wonder though which side of the conflict are they on and under what condition are they there, after all Chechens fighters are usually considered mercenaries instead of jihadist.

In Syria they are definitely jihadists, not mercenaries; especially those fighting under the auspices of JMA, JN, and ISIS. In Ukraine they are more than likely mercenaries since they are on the pro - Russia side.
