I need help with a somewhat important decision.

Play soccer

Do not play soccer

Other?

I'm actually being serious this time... So I'll give you the backstory. Please read at least the TL;DR before voting. TL;DR at the bottom. So I'm going into my senior year next fall. Last year I played varsity soccer/football (I'm going to refer to it as soccer) and did fairly well. I have a couple friends on the team but nothing major. I enjoy playing soccer, but it isn't anything I couldn't live without. I completely acknowledge the benefits of playing a sport. It would offer leadership opportunities as well as keep me in better physical condition. However, I am an academic. Sports won't do much for me in the long run. Next year I am taking four AP classes in addition to physics and probably an online programming class. I currently have a 4.0 in a 4.0 scale and would like to keep it that way. My academic (and life) plans are to go to a university to dual major in neuroscience and computer science (don't worry, I will be accepted). Eventually, I aspire to go to medical school. Medical schools not only look at grades but at leadership ability. This may be important in my decision. My concerns: I'm worried playing soccer will distract me from my studies. I want to maintain my 4.0, and playing soccer may make that more difficult. I also would prefer to have a more malleable schedule in order to make plans more easily. Soccer schedules are fairly strict and concrete. Other activities I would be participating in: Videogames (recreationally, only when I have time) A high school volunteer system; I'm thinking of becoming an officer to show leadership Math and science competitions (these are fairly infrequent) Enjoying whatever spare time I can with friends. Possibly a job. I just wanted your opinions. I won't make my decision solely from your votes, but they may help me make my decision. Please vote and explain why you did so. TL;DR I don't know whether to focus on academics or play soccer as well. (I could still do well while playing soccer, but it may hamper me) I want you to vote on what you think I should do, and tell me why. (Please) If you can, read the entire post so you can see why I'm having a dilemma. Thanks for your time.

  • Don't play, because soccer is a sissy immigrant sport and you don't want to be a foot fairy.

    •
(don't worry, I will be accepted).
Then don't worry about the grades as much. On top of that, you're more likely to be picked with a variety of interest, so playing a sport makes you a better choice for a university to want. This is your senior year though, so make sure you can still have fun in the end. if you got a job somewhere important, that allowed you to keep some free time, that might be a good option. I do recommend playing a sport though, it'll be good for you in the long run, believe it or not. Keeps you in shape, gives you something to do other than bad things, and will make you a more versatile person in the eyes of a university. It's what you WANT though. Don't forget that. You only get to go through highschool once, so make the most of it, without screwing it all up. AND HAVE FUN :D

Why are you talking advice from a online forum? I would talk to my coach about this and see what he says. Anyhow here's a little advice My friend Brandon was a varsity soccer player for most of high school except senior year and he ran into the same situation. He quit because he knew he couldn't handle it. My advice is that you're the only one who knows yourself and your work habits. If you don't think you can manage it then don't do it.

Holy crap, you are the overachiever I could never be. I do my classes just to get by and the rest is lolwat. Anyways, I really think you should go for soccer. You'll probably regret it if you don't man.

                • Do it Physical exercise and a demonstration of teamwork is very important fir your health, and your CV/Resume. Exercise helps stimulate the brain and improves blood flow. And doing a sport at senior year sends the right message to potential employers that you are physically fit, can show dedication and it displays your ability to work in a team.

                          • Do what you love while you can. Don't make decisions about your resume. As a highschool teacher I see so many kids just do stuff for resume reasons. I would give anything to play soccer again. I you love it make the memories while you can.

Of course academics always come first, but I wouldn't forfeit soccer entirely. Athletics help reduce stress and as long as you can keep above a 3.85 with soccer, you're schedule would probably be more appealable to colleges than 4.0 without and strong/committed extracurriculars.

                                    • My opinion probably isn't a good one because I don't believe in soccer. I think you should concentrate on you studies. You have some high aspirations and its not going to be easy. Perhaps do a sport that is less frequent. Maybe running or martial arts. You might not be into either one of them but try it. You might suprise yourself.

                                      • Sports are a good way to stay physically fit as well as make new friends, however unless you plan for a future in such a field, in the ultimatum it serves little purpose.
fgt
Once I got my first career out of college, no one cared. Being able to relate to team dynamics, work under pressure, and strive for a goal is more relatable in a 3.6 student than someone who's really good at memorizing stuff.
